Remote Server Control

With the evolution of data centres and the expansion of computer networks came the need to be able to control servers remotely. Wide Area Networks (WANs) are commonplace amongst even small to medium sized businesses, and it is this ever-expanding average network size that has really brought remote server control software to the workplace.

A number of server operating systems already offer a remote control solution, but in an environment where time really does mean money, a solution which can automate frequent tasks, allow access from anywhere in the world, without complex firewall configurations or Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) can truly make a difference to your IT administration workforce.

Remote Server Control

In order to enable remote server control, to any of your devices, from wherever in the world (providing there is a connection to the internet) with the benefits mentioned above, you will need to install a customisable remote control client on your servers, as well as the administration tool on your administrator workstations.

Aside from remote control of your servers, these administration workstations will be able to automate tasks, or bots, to ensure that network security is upheld, asset inventories are kept up to date, new software or updates are rolled out to all servers (or workstations) and even save energy. Furthermore, custom bots can created very quickly and easily provided your solution has this capability.

How do I begin controlling servers remotely?

The features and benefits discussed in this article are all found when using NTRadmin from NTRglobal. NTRadmin is very quick and easy to install, by following a few quick instructions:

Log into NTRadmin from your computer or even Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device

The automated wizard will install the NTRadmin agent on your LAN. The agent can also be emailed for installation on devices OFF your local network.

Once the agent has been installed, networks, servers and workstations can be managed straight away from the administration console.

Aside from remote control capabilities, the administration console also allows for the automated bots to be executed or scheduled. The pre-installed bots include:

  • Energy Saving Bots. These can logoff, shutdown, reboot or forcibly power off any managed device. They can also “hibernate” a device, saving the user session to disk, allowing it to be powered off without losing any data. The next time the device is powered on, the session is automatically restored. Finally, they can put the device into a stand-by mode. This maintains the current session, but keeps the computer running on very low power usage, with all data still held in memory.
  • Security Bots. These enable the administrator to allow or disallow Windows Firewall Exceptions as well as enable or disable the Firewall. They also allow the administrator to check if Antivirus or Antispam software is up to date, etc.
  • Cleaning Bots. These allow your systems administrators to delete files, folders, temporary files, uninstall unwanted software or even defragment hard disk volumes remotely.
  • System and System Recover Bots. These bots enable you to create system restore points on your server and restore back to those points from your remote location. They also allow administrators to kill local processes, lock the workstation, restart, stop or start services and run a command prompt on the remote machine.

NTRadmin brings you so much more than just remote server control, a number of the other pre-installed bots can be found discussed in our article on Installing Software Remotely. full 15 day free trial of NTRadmin is only a click away also.
